Replace mercury products
Products such as mercury thermometers and mercury switch thermostats can be replaced by non-mercury alternatives. Always dispose of residential mercury products through a household hazardous waste event or a hazardous waste disposal company.
How to pick a New Thermometer
Once you have disposed of your old mercury thermometer, it is important to choose a new thermometer that you are sure contains no mercury. Most stores carry digital and/or glass oral thermometers. When you buy a glass thermometer be sure that the package says mercury-free.
Never throw mercury in the trash!
Prevent the problem
Do not buy products that contain mercury. Find out whether a product contains mercury before you buy it. If you are unsure, contact the manufacturer to find out if they include mercury in their products.
